When Comet's agent processes the invite, it blends the attacker's hidden instructions with the user's request — a failure mode Zenity calls "intent collision." The injected instructions then direct Comet to an attacker-controlled site, which delivers a second-stage prompt reportedly written in Hebrew to reduce the effectiveness of English-focused safety filters. From there, the agent traverses local directories, opens sensitive files including configuration data and stored credentials, and exfiltrates the contents by embedding them in URL query parameters sent to an attacker-controlled server.
The vulnerability was responsibly disclosed to both Perplexity and 1Password on October 22, 2025. Perplexity issued an initial fix on January 23, 2026 blocking direct file:// access; researchers bypassed it within days using view-source:file:/// path traversal. A final patch arrived February 11, 2026, confirmed effective February 13 — a 114-day disclosure-to-final-patch cycle that itself reflects how structurally difficult these fixes are to implement correctly. 1Password responded by introducing hardening options including the ability to disable automatic sign-in and require explicit confirmation before autofilling credentials. The Cloud Security Alliance, NIST AI RMF, and a growing body of practitioner research have converged on a set of principles that are less exciting than a blanket ban but substantially more effective. From a technical controls perspective, what is emerging is a category of browser-native security that operates at the last mile rather than below it. Context-aware DLP policies designed to detect when sensitive data is being shared with AI services — not after the fact, but inline. Identity-based access controls that adjust permissions based on user behavior and risk profiles. Browser-layer visibility tools that can distinguish between human actions and agent actions within authenticated sessions, enabling audit trails that traditional endpoint tools cannot produce.
Here is the problem nobody publishing a governance framework is acknowledging directly: every one of these controls assumes the organization manages the device. The Wiz rules are sound as far as they go, but they rest on an assumption that does not survive contact with actual human behavior: that employees will reliably calibrate their trust in an AI agent appropriately. When the approved alternative requires a separate login, runs on a slower model, and lacks the integrations people rely on, shadow adoption wins every time. The approved tool has to be where people already work, meaningfully capable, and compliant by design. Otherwise the governance framework is theater.
The productivity argument is one that security teams tend to treat as someone else's problem, and that instinct is costing them credibility in the boardroom. Employees reaching for AI browsers are not being reckless. They are doing tasks faster. Competitor research that used to take two hours takes twenty minutes with an agentic browser running parallel searches and synthesizing results. Expense reports, meeting prep, contract review, competitive intelligence — the throughput gains are real and measurable. The question security leadership rarely asks out loud but boards are quietly beginning to ask is this: if your competitors' employees are using these tools and yours are not, what is the cumulative productivity delta over twelve months, and what does that cost the organization relative to the breach risk you are trying to prevent? The uncomfortable inversion here is worth sitting with: Gartner, the one prominent voice recommending a ban, sells no product that benefits from enterprises blocking AI browsers. The analysts recommending prohibition have no financial stake in the outcome. The vendors arguing loudest against prohibition profit directly from the alternative they are recommending.
